The Mountain Training LiftShare community will help to reduce the number of cars on the road, share fuel costs, reduce your own carbon footprint as well as ease car park overcrowding at popular venues.

How it works

Why you should consider lift sharing

Help the environment

“Developing independent walkers, climbers and mountaineers who practice and encourage, sustainable and sympathetic use of the outdoors by all users.” - Mountain Training Ethos

This ethos statement is one of the main reasons we’re championing lift sharing. The hills, mountains and crags provide us with so much, we have a responsibility to use them sustainably and sympathetically, and that means thinking carefully about how we travel. We strongly believe in the value of varied experience across the UK and Ireland. By getting more into lift sharing and reducing the number of cars on the road, you will be getting that experience whilst also helping to reduce carbon emissions going into the atmosphere, improving air quality and ultimately doing a little more to engage in combatting the climate crisis.

Meet new people

Car sharing can be a great way to meet people with shared interests; they might be on the same course, gaining experience towards the same qualification or attending the same CPD workshop. The LiftShare platform has already helped over 1.2 million people share their journeys and we’d like our community to benefit and make some new friends along the way.

Reduce traffic

Car sharing takes cars off the road, helping reduce air pollution and helping to reduce congestion (and therefore fewer traffic jams).

With fewer cars on the road, there will also be less need for road expansions and parking spaces as well as less demand for gas and oil.

It’s good for your health

By car sharing and asking others to do the same, you are changing behaviours and are more likely to use other modes of sustainable, public transport and active forms of transport (cycling and walking). Perhaps you don’t own a car or have regular use of a car and would love to explore further afield? More opportunities to get active and get outdoors could open up to you…

Spending more time as a passenger could help reduce your stress levels. Having someone else in the car with you whilst you're driving (or being driven) can also make a journey seem shorter and is much more pleasant.

According to LiftShare, if half of UK motorists received a lift one day a week, congestion and pollution would be reduced by 10%, traffic jams by 20% and could save you an average of £1000 per year!

How safe is car sharing?

When it comes to travelling, everyone is responsible for their own safety. However, LiftShare recommend some simple security measures:

  • Avoid exchanging home addresses with your travelling companion before you meet them
  • Arrange to meet in a public place
  • Inform a friend or family member about the person you will be travelling with, when and to where
  • Make sure you show each other your IDs - e.g. passports, or driving licences - so you know you're travelling with the right person
  • You are under no obligation to go ahead with any car share. If you have any doubts about your travelling companion, for any reason, you should avoid travelling with them.

For everything else you might want to know about lift sharing, LiftShare have put together a very useful list of frequently asked questions including a useful calculator to help work out the cost contribution per passenger for your journey.
