Women in Mountain Training Conference - delivery team recruitment

A session to discuss the different needs of groups, participants, colleagues and leaders. This session aims to build an understanding of how well the industry is set up to cater to different needs, how leaders can support participants better and where to go for more support yourself.

Top tips for preparing for a Mountain Training assessment and for passing first time. A look at strategies to overcome practical and emotional barriers. Themes could include goal setting, practical considerations e.g. when to book a course, final preparations, support networks, overcoming doubts etc. This session should focus on challenges specifically affecting women at assessment as well as more general tips. See Will Hardy's PhD research for more info and ideas.

6 participants, 5 hour session

A daytime session covering various elements of the navigation syllabi to support candidates with Hill and Moorland and Mountain Leader level navigation. Feel free to focus on areas that are a particular specialty/interest or take a broader approach. The session time includes a small amount of travel time to suitable terrain near Outward Bound Ullswater. If required, small outdoor pods are available on site to briefly cover theory.

Minimum level of qualification: Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor with experience of working on Mountain Training walk leadership courses.

6 participants, 5 hour session

A session at a nearby suitable crag to practise and discuss gear placements for climbing and rigging. The session time includes a small amount of travel time to a suitable venue near Outward Bound Ullswater. The ability to provide suitable kit would be advantageous though candidates booking onto this session will be asked to bring their own personal equipment. If required, small outdoor pods are available on site to briefly cover theory.

Minimum qualification: Rock Climbing Development Instructor

6 participants, 4 hour session

A practical session focussing on developing the group's environmental knowledge in a particular area of your expertise. This should be a topic area that is useful for candidates holding or working towards Mountain Training qualifications! This session will likely involve a walk and talk from Outward Bound Ullswater but other interesting suggestions will definitely be considered! If required, small outdoor pods are available on site.

Minimum qualification: any Mountain Training walk leadership qualification, relevant to the terrain you plan to take the group into.

6 participants, 4 hour session

A practical session focussing on developing attendees’ ability to manage a group whilst out on the hill or at the crag.  This session will likely involve a walk and talk from Outward Bound Ullswater but other interesting suggestions will definitely be considered! If required, small outdoor pods are available on site.

Please note that a whole group session titled “Tackling Discriminatory Behaviour” is being delivered at the conference. Your session should therefore not focus on particularly challenging behaviour, but more on general skills of managing group dynamics, safety and mixed ability levels during activities.

Minimum qualification: any Mountain Training walk leadership or climbing instructor qualification, relevant to the terrain you plan to take the group into. Plus plenty of experience managing a variety of groups.
