Winter Skills reprint editor - freelance

Contracted by: Mountain Training Publications

Remuneration: £1250, for an expected 5 days’ work. 50% to be paid 31st November 2025 and the balance paid on completion. Additional days may be agreed by Mountain Training Publications in advance, to be paid at £250 per day.

Background: Winter Skills by Andy Cunningham and Allen Fyffe was originally published in 2007 and extensively reviewed for the current third edition published in 2020. Under the guidance of the Digital and Communications Manager and the Chief Executive Officer, the purpose and intent of the role is to review the third edition of Winter Skills to check for minor amends ahead of a reprint.

Work to be completed: words by end of November 2025, photo sourcing/acquisition may extend into January 2026.

Role description

• Review the currency of the book’s content.
• Identify amends required e.g. typos and minor factual updates.
• Source suitable replacement photos, if required.
• Suggest illustration amends, if required.
• Write replacement copy, if required.

Qualifications

• Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor or IFMGA Guide

Communication and editorial

• An ability to explain complicated subjects/complex skills through clear and simple text.
• An ability to communicate at all levels and to work collaboratively.
• An ability to produce clear and effective copy.
• Excellent attention to detail and accuracy.
• Good time management skills and the ability to work under own initiative.

Subject knowledge

• Personal knowledge and knowledge of winter walking and winter climbing activities in Scotland.
• Experience of teaching winter walking and climbing skills.
• Experience of working on Winter Mountain Leader, Winter Mountaineering and Climbing Instructor courses or BMG winter courses.
