To access a UIMLA licence
The MTUKI International Mountain Leader certificate remains valid for life. Section 2.1.2 Article 4 of the UIMLA Standard restricts the use of the title, “International Mountain Leader,” to those holding a current UIMLA licence.
In the UK and Ireland, the UIMLA licensing process is administered by BAIML who issue the licence on behalf of UIMLA.
To maintain the UIMLA licence, candidates must undertake periodic CPD, hold a valid first aid certificate and professional liability insurance.
Those qualified under the 2012 standard or earlier
Existing International Mountain Leaders who wish to remain a UIMLA-licensed IML, and those who qualify under the 2012 standard before 1 January 2028, will be required to complete Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to align with the UIMLA Standard 2024 beyond a future date to be set by BAIML.
These requirements will be introduced in a timely manner for full (UIMLA-licensed IML) membership of BAIML.
The new requirements are:
- A minimum 6-hour course in Travel Risk Management.
- A minimum 6-hour course in Environment Awareness, Sustainability and Minimum Impact.
- A minimum 3-hour course in Safeguarding that is specific to the activities of the IML or 6 hours learning from recognised standard Safeguarding courses (e.g. level 1 + level 2).
- Minimum 5 days of additional winter training from either:
- A Winter Mountain Leader training course (or assessment if exemption was gained for training), or
- A minimum 5-day winter skills course (approved and validated in the CMS by BAIML as equivalent training and granted accreditation of prior learning – APL) or
- A 4-day (new) ‘module II’ winter IML course + 1-day approved BAIML winter CPD.
Attendance on the MTUKI (MTS) Winter Mountain Leader courses and on the module 2 winter IML course gain automatic recognition. 5-day winter skills courses delivered by the National Centres or by an MTUKI (MTS) approved Winter ML provider also gain automatic recognition.
