Bouldering Wall Instructor – new qualification now live
31.03.25Mountain Training is proud to announce the launch of a new qualification for the sector: Bouldering Wall Instructor.
The qualification will provide a nationally recognised standard for those working or volunteering in bouldering walls and on artificial outdoor boulders across the UK and Ireland.
Indoor bouldering has increased in popularity at an impressive rate, thanks to the many new bouldering-only gyms that have been built in the last 10 years. This growth, which shows no signs of slowing down, prompted calls from the sector for an instructional qualification that didn’t require proficiency in roped climbing and belaying.
Guy Jarvis, Mountain Training England Executive Officer said, “It’s really important to the Mountain Training network that our qualifications support the whole sector and we had become increasingly aware that our previous offering didn’t suit bouldering-only walls. We’re pleased to have worked with them to find a solution that will benefit instructors, coaches and climbers for years to come.”
Following a thorough recruitment process, 35 providers have been selected to deliver the new Bouldering Wall Instructor qualification across the UK and Ireland, including several bouldering walls and chains that are brand new to Mountain Training delivery. We’re really pleased to have them all on board.
Training includes a 1-day practical course (7 hours), plus online learning, followed by a period of consolidation and then a 3-hour practical assessment to become qualified. Courses will be available from April 2025 and the online learning is accessed through tahdah, our candidate management system.

Mountain Training would like to thank the working group of individuals from across the sector, particularly members of the Association of British Climbing Walls who contributed to the development of this new qualification.
