The MTA mentoring programme

In 2018 we launched a trial mentoring programme to provide mentoring support for MTA members who are working towards a qualification assessment, and offer current experienced qualification holders the chance to provide support to other members.

Aims & Objectives

  • To reduce drop out between registration and training
  • To reduce drop out between training and assessment
  • To increase the number of people from groups that are currently underrepresented to register, attend training and pass assessment
  • To provide support and encouragement, particularly between training and assessment
  • To empower people to achieve their goals

"Having a mentor is working well for me. I haven’t needed to call upon him as much as I thought as just a small amount of contact has massively boosted my confidence. Knowing I have someone who I can ask daft questions is hugely valuable.” Ellen Piercy, 2018 mentee.

Programme requirements

Successful applicants commit themselves to MTA’s mentoring programme for a 12 month period. Subject to agreement, your mentoring relationship may continue after the 12 month period, until the mentee successfully passes an assessment, or until you decide, by mutual agreement, to end the formal relationship.

During this 12 month period you will be expected to:

  • Attend a Mentor Training Day (mentors only). The training day will be delivered by MTA and will cover mentoring skills, expectations and processes.
  • Attend a Meet Your Mentor event (mentors and mentees) to set goals and expectations. Meet Your Mentor happens in the evening of the Mentor Training Day.
  • Conduct a minimum of 6 interactions. This could be face to face, email or phone.
  • Hold a minimum of 2 face to face meetings.
  • Submit feedback at 6 months and 12 months to Mountain Training Association for monitoring and evaluation purposes

How to apply

Entry to the programme is by application process. Due to the high volume of applications not all entries will be selected. Applications go live annually every spring.
