Taking your climbing to the next level

Last weekend Samantha Leary of Sam Leary Mountaineering ran two brand new single day workshops for MTA; Ropes and Rock on Saturday was followed by Single to Multipitch on Sunday. Here's a little update on the weekend:

The weather was kind to us and we had a great couple of days in the mountains of North Wales on dry rock.

Saturday was all about staying safe on a single pitch crag. We spent most of the day looking at placing gear and setting up top and bottom ropes. There was still time for some movement coaching and this proved to be very beneficial for all. Branwen was apprehensive of trying some of the harder routes as she had not managed them before but with Louise belaying she was soon touching the crabs at the top! Chris and Sion were also trusting their rigging and themselves on the harder of the routes. Great to see technical rope and movement skills being put to good use in a very short period of time. The post course debrief was held in the Siabod Cafe where the scones and coffee were as welcome as the warmth.
Chris had signed up for both workshops and was out with John on Sunday for the single to multipitch course. We almost had the Moelwyns all to ourselves. Both gentlemen did very well, the first half of the day was spent leading but with the security of a ghost rope from above. After lunch competence and confidence was high so we removed the top rope and both John and Chris led in fine style. We finished the day looking at how to evacuate from a route by abseil if needed. A huge quantity of skills covered and refined over the day; we rounded it all off with coffee and cake... the perfect way to finish off a great day out on the crag!
