MOUNTAIN SKILLS INFORMATION

'The Mountain Skills course is an ideal choice for walkers interested in transferring their walking skills to more mountainous terrain. Ideally, participants would have some basic hill walking experience and have a reasonable level of fitness. Courses are run in the higher mountain areas of the UK and Ireland.'

Course Providers

All courses must be delivered by an approved course provider. For course provider responsibilities please see the Skills Scheme Quality Manual area.

Participant Registration

  • At least 12 years old.
  • An interest in increasing personal hill walking experience

Minimum Course Duration

  • 18 hours.
  • Delivered in a 2 or 3 day programme.

Course Size

  • 2 participants minimum.
  • 16 participants maximum (with 2 approved tutors)

Staffing Ratio

  • 1 staff: 8 participants

Course Tutor Experience

The courses are delivered by approved course tutors only, who are all experienced Mountain Training award holders and work on behalf of the course provider. Please see Course Tutor Requirements in the Skills Scheme Quality Manual for further guidance.
