CLIMBING WALL LEADING AWARD

The Climbing Wall Leading Award is designed for people who want to teach lead climbing at artificial climbing walls in the UK and Ireland.

Course Director

All courses must be delivered by an approved course director. For course director responsibilities please see the Quality Manual area.

Scope of the award

For the purposes of the scheme, a ‘wall’ is used to describe artificial climbing walls, boulder, towers and other purpose-built structures designed for rock climbing. Management of such facilities is not included within the scheme.

Candidate Registration Requirements

  • At least 18 years old
  • Hold either the Climbing Wall Award or the Single Pitch Award
Additionally candidates must have an up to date logbook with evidence of :
  • 50 lead indoor routes, of which at least half are F6a
  • Climbed at three different major climbing walls
  • Belayed a lead climber 50 times
  • 20 supervising sessions as a CWA or SPA holder

Candidate Requirements

  • Registered on the scheme.
  • Mountain Training screens each application against the criteria above before registering candidates for the scheme.

Minimum Course Duration

  • 8 hours.
  • Delivered in a day.

Group Size

  • 2 candidates minimum.
  • 8 candidates maximum.

Staffing Ratio

  • 1 staff : 4 candidates.

Additional Course Staff Award

Climbing Wall Leading Award or higher. Please see course staff requirements in the Quality Manual area for further guidance.

ASSESSMENT COURSE

Candidate Requirements

  • At least 18 years old.
  • Attended a Climbing Wall Leading Award training course (or have been granted exemption).
  • Be familiar with the syllabus.
  • 100 lead indoor routes, of which at least half are F6a.
  • Belayed a lead climber 100 times.
  • Observed five teaching leading sessions delivered by a suitably qualified person.
  • Hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 8 hours and relevant to the work of a Climbing Wall Leading Award holder.

  • 6 hours.
  • Delivered in a day.

Group Size

  • 2 candidates minimum.
  • 8 candidates maximum.

  • 1 staff : 4 candidates.
