CLIMBING WALL AWARD and ABSEIL MODULE INFO


The Climbing Wall Award trains and assesses candidates in the skills required to supervise climbers on purpose built artificial climbing walls and boulders.

Course Director

All courses must be delivered by an approved course director. For course director responsibilities please see the Quality Manual area.

Scope of the award

For the purposes of the scheme, a ‘wall’ is used to describe artificial climbing walls, boulder, towers and other purpose-built structures designed for rock climbing. Management of such facilities is not included within the scheme.

Candidate Registration Requirements

  • At least 17 years old.
  • Six month’s climbing wall climbing experience.
  • An interest in supervising climbing wall groups.

TRAINING COURSE

Candidate Requirements

  • Registered on the scheme
  • Recorded visits to 3 different climbing walls on at least 15 different occasions; this must include at least one major public wall
  • To have led routes on walls
  • To have an understanding of the wider sport of climbing and ideally have climbed outdoors.
Candidates must complete a CWA training course before attending an Abseil Module training course.

Minimum Course Duration

  • 12 hours for the CWA.
  • Delivered in a 2 day programme or as three sessions.
  • 4 hours for the Abseil Module. Delivered either as an addition to a CWA training course or separately.

Group Size

  • 4 candidates minimum.
  • 12 candidates maximum.
  • Staffing Ratio
  • 1 staff : 6 candidates.

ASSESSMENT COURSE

Candidate Requirements

  • At least 18 years old.
  • Attended a Climbing Wall Award training course (or have been granted exemption).
  • Be familiar with the syllabus.
  • Have logged a minimum of 30 visits to at least three different climbing wall
  • Have assisted in the supervision of at least 15 instructed sessions on at least two different walls including a large public facility in a variety of contexts. A session is a half day or evening.
  • Hold a current first aid certificate, minimum 8 hours and relevant to the work of a Climbing Wall Award holder.
  • It is not essential for candidates to hold a reference to complete the assessment.
Candidates must pass a CWA assessment course before attending an Abseil Module assessment course.

  • Delivered in a day.
  • 2 hours for the Abseil Module. Delivered either immediately after a CWA assessment course or separately.

  • 2 candidates minimum.
  • 8 candidates maximum.
