Mountain Training Scotland (MTS) is recruiting one Director for the role of Vice Chair

Who we are

Mountain Training Scotland, as one of five National Mountain Training Boards, works closely with the central coordinating body, Mountain Training United Kingdom (MTUK), to develop and manage a portfolio of qualification schemes. This ensures parity in the qualifications syllabi, and consistency of delivery across all the National Mountain Training Boards throughout the UK and Ireland. As a National Governing Body, MTS receives investment from its funding partner Sport Scotland.

Our Purpose

“Mountain Training Scotland’s purpose is the advancement, for public benefit, of education and training (in conjunction where appropriate with other bodies or persons) in the skills required for the leadership and instruction of safe hill, mountain and moorland walking, mountaineering, rock and ice climbing and other associated activities practiced in cliff and mountain environments, and to offer advice on matters of training and safety.”

Our Organisation

Mountain Training Scotland is a Company Limited by Guarantee and a registered Charity. Meetings of MTS are attended by representatives of elected member organisations. The Members decide on the policy and develop the strategic plan of MTS. The Members are supported by a Board of a maximum of 6 elected, executive Directors. This Board is known as the Executive. The functions of the Directors are to oversee the implementation of the strategic plan and the governance of the Company.

The Company employs an Executive Officer, who with administration support from the part-time MTS admin assistant, has responsibility for the day to day running of the business and who reports directly to the Executive.

You will be expected;
  • to attend Executive and Members meetings, take an active part in running the business and advise the Executive and staff in your specialist area of expertise;
  • to think strategically and creatively, to exercise independent judgement and a willingness to speak your mind;
  • to be part of an exciting, dynamic partnership between Mountain Training UK, Mountaineering Scotland, Glenmore Lodge and sportscotland;
  • to have a passion for the delivery of Mountain Training Scotland’s Strategic Plan.
Your commitment will be;
  • to attend three executive meetings (usually by phone) and three Members meetings per year held in Edinburgh, Perth and Aviemore;
  • to be willing to attend one or two MTUK meetings per year held in N Wales, Scotland and N Ireland;
  • be willing to contribute to management discussions from time to time outside of meeting commitments.
  • be willing to commit time to work with the Executive to support various projects as and when required.
