Free climbing for schools

On 17th July, MTA member, Graham Little and the rest of the team from Outdoor Education NW (an AALA licensed provider), joined forces with West View climbing centre to host their very first free climbing festival for local schools along the Fylde coast.

The aim of the event was to create an opportunity for a high volume of young people to have their first taste of climbing in a relaxed, fun atmosphere. The event took place at Blackpool Sixth Form College and saw almost 200 young people climb for the very first time. A range of schools attended; primary, secondary, FE, and SEN, and all participants left with a NICAS participation certificate.

Graham hopes that after this initial taster of climbing, more young people and schools will want to get involved in climbing again in the future through sessions at local walls or out on rock, or directly with NICAS registered walls.

He stated, "I emailed local schools and the uptake was immense. It was a sell out within a few hours and we could have filled the day 3 times over."

The feedback from the schools was so positive that Graham and the team will be extending the festival next year to a 2-day event and offer a primary day and secondary day too. They are also looking at hosting a climbing competition in the winter for schools on the Fylde coast.
