Single Pitch Bits and Bolts

Spa workshop Scotland

Thanks to those who came along to Auchinstarry Quarry for a Scottish evening workshop for SPA Trainees/Award holders. We told rigging horror stories, discussed 'good' vs 'best' practise, solved Alistair's problem and I put him on the spot by making him explain the role of sacrificial protection in the corrosion of bolts. We were still stood talking in the car park well after dark!

Alan Halewood ran an evening workshop for SPA Trainees/Award holders at Auchinstarry Quarry near Glasgow which was meant as an informal get together to allow members an opportunity to ask a provider any questions they might have about the syllabus.

As with all these things we started off reviewing some rigging options and the pros and cons of various knots before heading to the top of the crag. Here there were 3 good examples of quite different bolts including 1 in a poor state. Making use of knowledge in the group we had a discussion about why it was corroding so badly For more on this and bolts in general see the excellent BMC handout

One of the group also had a specific question about the rope work involved in the 'worst case scenario' where you had to approach a student from above to pick them off the crag. After discussing prevention and other options everyone had the opportunity to try a rescue in this scenario. Along the way they shared thoughts on helmets and use of the phrase 'best practise' as opposed to talking about 'good practise'. Discussions carried on in the car park until after dark!'
