Aims & Objectives

  • To reduce drop out between registration and training
  • To reduce drop out between training and assessment
  • To increase the number of people from groups that are currently underrepresented to register, attend training and pass assessment
  • To provide support and encouragement, particularly between training and assessment
  • To empower people to achieve their goals

The Plan

During March and April we will be recruiting 12 mentors and 15 mentees as part of our trial mentor programme, matching mentoring pairs according to what mentors can offer and what mentees need. We are delivering a training day for mentors on the 8th June which will also include a Meet Your Mentor evening for mentees and mentors to get to know each other.

The initial programme will last one year from the 8th June and we will ask for feedback from participants to help monitor and evaluate the impact of the programme. For this particular trial we will recruit participants from the North West and Midlands areas of England. Having mentors and mentess from the same areas will reduce travel and associated costs for participants and make it convenient for them to connect and meet up.

Why mentoring?

MTUK has trialled mentoring for the past two years with some success. The Association of Mountaineering Instructors runs a mentoring programme for Mountaineering Instructor Certificate trainees and in 2018 have pledged to roll this out to Mountaineering Instructor Award trainees. So mentoring is something we have tried on a small scale, had some success with and that we want to use to benefit more candidates.

How to apply

Entry to the programme will be by application. Please download and read the Mentor role description and application forms from the MTA Members Area.

Applications close at 12 noon on Friday 20th April. We will be reviewing all the applications during the week of 23-27th April and will offer places on the programme during the week ending 4th May.

We intend to recruit participants, both mentors and mentees, with a wide range of qualifications, needs and experience. We also anticipate a high volume of applications. If you are unsuccessful on this occasion please be aware that there will be other opportunities. We intend to learn from this initial trial programme so that we can roll MTA mentoring out nationwide in 2019.
