Exploring the geology in the Peak

"The lovely late-spring / early-summer evening of Tuesday 16th June saw 13 people gather in the Peak District village of Castleton for a Peak Regional Mountain Training Association organised walk exploring the Limestone and Sandstone geology of the area. Peak geology Peter Judd and Cath Lee jointly led fellow members through Cave Dale, up past Treak Cliff Cavern and round to the mighty Mam Tor landslip to look at how the area came to be formed and changed over hunderds of millions of years. Neither Peter nor Cath would describe themselves as geology experts in any way but a keen interest and the use of various books describing local geology (the best by far being fellow member Paul Gannon's excellent Rock Trails Peak District book) provided the basis of the material delivered.

Other participants joined in to share their knowledge too, leading to a most interesting evening. I think this event made clear that the absence of an expert need be no barrier to Peer lead groups delivering effective and useful CPD events simply harnessing the skills and knowledge already present amongst the membership and look forward to seeing more such events in the future"

Here are some comments from Stephen Jones the regional Coordinator

First of all, thanks to Peter Judd and Cath Lee for organising a fantastic geology walk on Tuesday around Castleton. The weather was glorious, and the long evening shadows across the hill faces gave just the right 3D definition for people looking at land-shapes. Peter delivered a fascinating and well-researched explanation of what we were looking at: 350 million-year-old coral reefs, minor volcanic eruptions later buried by yet more limestone in tropical seas, fossils in the rocks and bits of Blue John just lying on the paths, and of course the full majesty, close up, of the Mam Tor landslip. A great evening. Peak geology 2 Future events will include an introduction to GPS, and an evening with Mountain Training. You can also join us for a social climb at Birchen on Tuesday 30th June meeting at 6.15 in the Robin Hood car park above Baslow, or if you arrive later, come and find us on the crags.
