Peaks night nav 2

An Evening in the Peaks

Wednesday 4th March saw the first formal event held for the members of the newly-formed Mountain Training Association Peak District group – an evening of night navigation practice based on Houndkirk Moor overlooking Sheffield, hosted by Olly Toogood and Tony Hall, with very able support from Regional Co-ordinator Stephen Jones.

A group of twelve keen navigators met in the car park at The Fox House Inn and headed out at 6pm in three groups. Despite the forecast having been less-than-promising, the weather on the evening was superb – clear and crisp with a cold breeze – but with a bright moon providing excellent conditions for the event.

Tracing various legs across the moor, accompanied by Sheffield’s bright lights below and the Milky Way above, the groups spent three hours or so looking for points of interest such as Standing Stones, Medieval Crosses, Milestones (we learned that the road across the moor was once a toll road), Houndkirk Moor summit and other unusual landscape features. Good discussions were held before, during and after each leg so that maximum benefit could be gained by participants keen to enhance their skills.

Re-convening in The Fox House after a valuable and very enjoyable (if cold) navigation practise. Stephen then informally chaired an opportunity to discuss ideas for future events, volunteers to host the events, and encouragement to help those trained and working towards assessment – be it Mountain Leader, Hill and Moorland (Previously WGL) or other pertinent issues. Peaks night nav 3 The general consensus was that the evening was a big success and there was considerable enthusiasm in turn for making the new Regional Group a success too – and for making sure everyone who can benefit from future events has the chance to do so – whatever their requirements and experience.

The next Peaks Regional event is Leadership for challenging behaviour and special educational needs on Sat 11th April, you don't need to be a climber to attend.
